Search Cameron County Inmates

A Cameron County inmate search starts with the Sheriff's public jail roster. People look for an inmate to confirm a booking, plan a visit, send mail, or post bond. The roster is a fast first stop, but it has limits. It covers only certain recent and current jail categories, and it leaves out federal custody. So a Cameron County jail roster search may need a follow-up call or a check of state and federal tools. Knowing what the roster shows, what it hides, and which other systems to use makes the search work. The Sheriff's Office runs the county jail system and posts the list that most inmate lookups begin with.

Cameron County Jail Roster Overview

The Cameron County Sheriff's Office runs the county jail system and posts a public inmate list. Sheriff Manuel "Manny" TreviƱo leads the office. The roster updates every two hours. It shows people held now and within the last seven days who fall into set categories: those not yet presented to court, those awaiting bail, or those serving local or state-law sentences. The county is plain that the list is not comprehensive. Errors can occur, and the county warns users to verify details on their own rather than rely on the site for legal action.

The roster leaves out a large group. It does not include federal prisoners or detainees. That matters in a border county where federal enforcement is common. A person can be in federal custody, in immigration-related custody, or under U.S. Marshals process and never show on the county list. People sentenced to state prison move to a separate system as well. So a blank result does not always mean a person is free.

The Sheriff's home page is the entry point for the jail system and the inmate list.

You can confirm the office and its mission on the Cameron County Sheriff's Office home page, which links the Jail Division and Most Wanted tools.

How to Use the Cameron County Inmate Roster

The roster is a single web page built on a searchable data table. You do not need an account. You type in a search box and the list filters as you go. Before you search, it helps to read the county's own scope note, which explains who is and is not on the list.

The county posts a short page that introduces the inmate list and its scope.

Read the scope statement on the Cameron County inmates list page before you open the live roster, so the limits are clear up front.

That scope note is the official word on what the roster covers, so it is worth reading first.

  1. Open the inmate list at the official Sheriff's roster URL.
  2. Type a defendant name, booking number, SO number, or charge keyword into the search box to filter the list at once.
  3. Review the matching rows, which show the picture, booking date, name, booking number, SO number, and charges.
  4. If the person is not found, remember the list excludes federal custody and may miss some recent moves, then call the jail to confirm.

The live interface is a responsive table with paging and a scroll-to-top button.

You can open the working list at the Cameron County inmate list interface, which loads the current roster rows.

Because the page updates every two hours, a row you see now may change or drop later in the day.

Roster Search Fields

The roster does not use a long form with separate boxes for each field. It uses one global search box that filters the whole table, plus an interactive filter builder for the data columns. So the "fields" are really the columns you can search against. Type any part of a name, a number, or a charge, and the table narrows in real time.

The table below maps the search controls and columns on the roster.

Field LabelTypeRequiredNotes
Search boxTextNoGlobal filter; type to instantly narrow the inmate list.
SearchBuilderInteractive filterNoBuilds filters on booking date, defendant, booking number, and SO number.
BookingDtColumnNoBooking date; the table sorts by this column by default.

What an Inmate Record Shows

The roster does not open a separate profile page for each person in the official interface reviewed. What you get is the row in the table. That row carries a small set of fields. The county states all individuals shown are innocent until proven guilty, and the charge is for reference only, not a sign of guilt. So read the row as a custody pointer, not a verdict.

The first table lists what a roster row does show. The second lists common fields it does not.

FieldWhat It Shows
PictureA mugshot thumbnail rendered from the record's picture field.
Booking DateThe date the person was booked into the county jail.
DefendantThe name of the person in custody.
Booking NumberThe unique number tied to this booking event.
SO NumberThe Sheriff's Office number for the person.
ChargesThe charge text, listed for reference only.

Many details people expect are simply not on the public table. To get those, you call the jail or check court records.

Not Shown on the RosterWhere to Look Instead
Age, date of birth, height, weightCall the jail or check the court file.
Race, sex, arresting agencyCourt records or the arresting agency.
Bond amountCall the jail or check the case docket.
Housing unit or podCall the facility holding the person.
Court date, magistrate, warrant numberThe issuing court and its docket.
Release date, medical or protective flagsNot public; medical details are withheld from family.

Note: Because the roster hides bond and housing, posting bond usually means calling the facility or checking the court docket first.

Cameron County Jail Facilities

The Cameron County jail system spreads across more than one site, in Brownsville and Olmito. The Jail Division page lists the facilities but does not publish a capacity for each one. Each site has its own address and phone. Knowing which facility holds a person helps with visits, mail, and property pickup. The contact cards below come from the official Jail Division page.

The Jail Division page is the source for facility contacts and jail rules.

Booking Process in Cameron County

Booking is the intake step after an arrest. An arrested person is brought to jail, identified, searched, and booked. Staff take a photo, screen the person, and assign a booking number and an SO number. After that, the person is held pending a magistrate or bond, presented to court, transferred, or released. The roster scope reflects three of these paths: not yet presented to court, awaiting bail, or serving a local or state sentence.

Bond and release are where the public roster falls short. The table does not show a bond amount or a release date. So to learn whether bond is set, and how much, you call the facility or check the case docket. A booking can also appear before a case is formally filed, which is one reason the roster, the court docket, and warrant status do not always line up.

Federal cases follow a different track entirely. People in federal custody are not on the county list.

Visitation Hours and Rules

Visitation is set by the Sheriff and can change, so confirm the current schedule before you travel. Adult visitors must show valid photo identification, such as a Texas driver's license, a Texas DPS ID, a passport, a military ID, an immigration visa or border crossing card, or a Matricula Consular. Inmates get a minimum of two 20-minute visits per week, with at least one in the evening or on a weekend. Attorneys and clergy follow separate, wider windows.

The schedule below reflects the minimum visit rule and the attorney and clergy windows from the jail visitation plan.

Visitor TypeDaysHours

Note: Clergy must register through the Sheriff's Office or Jail Administrator before a visit, and attorneys must present State Bar identification.

Inmate Mail and Medical Privacy

Mail rules at the Cameron County jail are strict. The Jail Information PDF publishes a mail format for each facility, which uses the inmate's full name and ID, the pod or cell assignment, and the facility street address. Many items are banned in incoming mail, including glued or taped items, glitter, stickers, clothing or fabric, stamps or labels, laminated items, puzzles, blank paper, computer printouts, and third-party mail. When in doubt, keep letters plain.

Medical information is off limits to family. The Jail Division states that no medical information on any inmate will be given to a family member, for security reasons. Prescribed medicine may be brought for an inmate but must be approved by the medical department first. Family phone calls are not transferred to medical staff. So a relative who wants a health update will not get one through the jail.

Commissary and Inmate Funds

Money the inmate had at booking is deposited into an inmate trust fund. During confinement, inmates can buy commissary through the jail's commissary vendor, and those purchases are deducted from the trust fund. Family and friends may deposit money into the account. Inmates cannot hold cash, checks, or money orders, and they cannot transfer funds to another inmate. With shift supervisor approval, an inmate may release money to a family member, attorney, or bonds person.

To send money by mail, only a money order or a certified check is accepted. No cash. Mail goes to the inmate trust fund at the Olmito post office box.

Federal and State Custody Searches

Because the county roster excludes federal custody and people sent to state prison, a full inmate search often needs other tools. People transferred from the county jail to state prison appear in the Texas prison system. People in federal custody appear in the federal locator. A notification service can alert you to a custody change. The Community Supervision and Corrections Department handles probation and supervision for people who are not held in jail.

For someone moved to state prison, the Texas Department of Criminal Justice is the right tool.

Search the TDCJ Offender Search by name, TDCJ number, or SID number when a person has been sent to state prison or state supervision.

TDCJ is the place to confirm a state prison stay that the county list will not show.

For people in federal custody, the federal locator covers current and recent inmates.

Use the Federal Bureau of Prisons inmate locator to find a person by name or register number when the case is federal.

The BOP locator shows facility and projected release date, but it does not show county booking or local bond.

To get alerts when custody changes, a notification service can help where the data is shared.

Register for alerts through VINELink, which offers phone, email, or text notice after you locate a record.

VINELink works only where the participating agency shares custody data, so it is one tool among several.

For people under supervision rather than in jail, the county runs a supervision office.

The Cameron County Community Supervision and Corrections Department handles probation, supervision, and victim services.

That office is the right contact when a person is supervised in the community instead of held in custody.
